The Reserve Bank of India released the “Draft Guidelines for ‘on tap’ Licensing of Universal Banks in the Private Sector”, that relax earlier stringent conditions for bank licenses. This move opens up India’s banking sector to more competition that should result in greater access to financial services across the country. Suggestions/comments on the Draft Guidelines can be mailed to nbddbr@rbi.org.in by June 30, 2016.

The March 2016 ICFI Policy Brief “Aadhaar: Understanding Content, Intent and Portent” examines the evolution of Aadhaar since inception till the passing of the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Bill, 2016 as a money bill.

In a two-part series in Business Standard, Sumita Kale has assessed the progress of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana – “Don't undermine the strides made by Jan-Dhan” (4th May 2016) and “Jan-Dhan not perfect, but its progress is laudable” (5th May 2016).
