April 2013

The monthly newsletter from the Indicus Centre for Financial Inclusion documents the latest news and views in the financial inclusion space, to provide a knowledge base that will help build understanding around how to accelerate the poor’s access to high-quality financial services.

This month we lead with reports from the Mobile World Congress 2013 held in Barcelona. As access to the mobile network grows amongst the unbanked, mobile money is seen as a significant driver for economic and social change by enabling a digital pathway to financial inclusion. For central banks the crucial step lies in creating an open and level playing field that allows banks and non-bank payment providers to operate in the market with appropriate and effective regulation. The lead stories include a) a report by Simone de Castri that puts together the enabling regulatory solutions and b) a series of interviews with stakeholders from India on the regulatory and commercial aspects of mobile payments here.
